How Zakat is calculated
Zakat is 2.5% of your net zakatable wealth (gold, silver, cash, savings, trade goods and money owed to you, minus debts due now) that you have owned for one full Islamic year, provided it is above the nisab. According to the Hanafi school, followed by most Muslims in Pakistan, the nisab is 7.5 tola of gold if you own only gold, or the value of 52.5 tola of silver if you own a mix of assets.
Gold weight units in Pakistan
1 tola = 11.664 grams = 12 masha = 96 ratti. Jewellery is usually 22K (91.6% pure) or 21K (87.5%). Jewellers also charge making charges and may deduct wastage (kaat) when you sell.
