⚖️ Calculate your BMI
BMI categories for adults (WHO)
| BMI | Category |
|---|---|
| Below 18.5 | Underweight |
| 18.5 – 24.9 | Healthy weight |
| 25 – 29.9 | Overweight |
| 30 and above | Obese |
For people of South Asian origin (Pakistan, India, Bangladesh), health risks such as diabetes can start at a lower BMI, so many doctors use 23 as an early warning point for overweight and 27.5 for obesity.
What is BMI?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²). Doctors and the World Health Organization use it as a simple first check of whether a person may be underweight, at a healthy weight, overweight or obese.
Limits of BMI
- BMI does not separate fat from muscle, so athletes may show a high BMI while being healthy.
- It is not used for children and teenagers in the same way — they need age-based charts.
- Waist size matters too: a large waist can increase health risk even with a normal BMI.
